Response to Eric

12-12-2004

holy shit is this a lot to get through....
hmmm...
let's begin with what i know.
1) homestar is running fine.
were you thrown by the "virus"?.... better get edgar. that shit was funny.
fyi, i use safari--mac's own web browser.
i dig the tab viewing and adequate pop-up block and the built-in google bar.

2)storage of an entire music catalog and the then immanent road to an iPod.
when i had a functioning 10GB iPod, i lusted for larger storage. this time last year, my brother got a 30GB while i had 10....my brother who had no clue about a mac or this thing and he has the balls to ask for a larger one than me.....but i digress.
then my 10GB went south and i still want to repair it, but i decided to get a 15GB, gen3) for two reasons: solitaire and a new philosophy.

a) solitaire?!
yes. that game has gotten me through many an alone taco bell meal, airport wait, mass transit transfer and kata clothes shopping. the 10GB Gen 2(that's second generation; iPods are on their 4thGen with the photo, mini and U2 being off shoots) software didn't have it, only starting with the gen3 pods.

b)new philosophy?!
yes, and this is the most important thing i can tell you: DO NOT TO BUY AN iPOD PHOTO. i'll tell you why in a bit.

3) living in the city: biggest mistake in your life?!
mom is a suburbanite. mom knows things about the burbs.
mom thinks she knows what is best for you.
mom is mom after all.
so tell mom that my bosses: VP of global design and the other director of Global design both live in the city of brotherly love.
the VP lives off 19th and fairmount. have you been to 19th and fairmount? i'll tell you that 2 blocks away is shit and that you don't walk the neighborhood farting rainbows. you walk street, you think street and you paranoia street. then you remember you like living here and you keep it in the back of your head but you don't let it dominate your life and decision-making.
the other?oh and this is rich; tell her about this one?the other is a good looking woman in her mid 30s. she's a widowed mother of a grade school girl. she makes booku bucks and where does she decide to live? you'll never guess...

three streets over from me.

no shit.

and do you know how much she paid for raw space — that's no kitchen, no bathrooms — in a converted cigar factory? that's a factory, not a house. that's not coriander countertops and marble fireplaces, that's 16000 square feet RIGHT ON GIRARD AVE. shit girard, not nice girard.(is there a nice girard?)
how much????? $350K...raw space.
now, you tell mom that when you are a good looking woman in her mid 30s, widowed mother of a grade school girl making booku bucks she can tell you that.
you may call this woman a fool, i consider her forward-thinking. why live again in king of prussia? she moved from this huge house in KoP, sold it, and move back to the city.
now deciding to buy on girard.

eric, i've got a house two blocks away that is going for $400K. this house is shit in my aesthetic opinion. i want four stories and a corner and a garage so no one breaks my goddamn window again. i want victorian and creaky floors and drafts and huge windows and a garden. for $400K, that's how i value WORTH.
if mom r? is worried about investment return, buy smart, but don't exclude the city. unless chernobyl happens in you backyard, your property value will be realized and the price justifiable.

with that said, happy house hunting.

3) birthday stuff.
i'm doing dinner wed., i see 'rent' on tues. night, dinner with the fam sat.
that's all i know now.
chris and i may do somethin' off the hook. if we do, i'll call you.

4)melissa....
forgive me, but i draw a blank on the face. curiosa/my 4th party blonde or dark haired girl from ???

5)mike....
is this the trend these days? chris's roomie jeremy is expecting a kid with his brooklyn-illegal immigrant polish girl "bosh"?bow-jin-a is the phonetic but i'll be damned if i know how to spell it. now mike to you?! goddamn DOESN'T ANYONE USE BIRTH CONTROL???!!!
i will knock you upside the fuckin head if you don't.

....aside if i could marry the demo version of scissor sisters 'filthy/gorgeous' with the US release, i'd be happy.

-resume- mike....aw shit! man. kata and i had a discussion after i dropped the bomb you dropped on me. i don't know what i'd do in that situation, but?and this is shit to quote a movie on something serious like this - but in se7en, when morgan freeman is talking to gweneth about if she could keep the baby and he says something to the effect of if you do it(abortion), don't regret it and if you keep it, love that baby as much as you can. and that's how i believe it until i'm in it.

best of luck to 'im. he just better not fall off the face of the earth as a result of it like jeremy.

6?
kata and i haven't seen anything since garden state, so it's all new to us.

2) redux
iPod philosophy:
IN iPod storage?this refers to the music you carry with you. i divide iPod carriers into two camps: the houser of the human genome AND the library card holder.
i was mr. DNA, now i am jimmy bookworm.
the difference: you can have it all at your finger tips or be an NBA player who visits every traveling city and has poontang equivalent to ms philly, miss new york, miss portland, miss LA, miss charlotte, miss miami, etc.

by that, i mean house your iPod "ladies" in playlists. these are kept in TWO PLACES. i have learned the hard way. the first place is your designated hard drive(internal/external). the second is a BACKUP of the first. i've had to rebuild my iTunes library 4 times. that's at it's max 7000 files. i'm down to 4800 because the others are located on my larger external "designated" drive. a bunch of lost 1s and 0s waiting to be rescued now for 4 months.

these "ladies" are a whim when you hook up to you PC. you may say, "i'm done with pantera (i'm a man o the times) and german folk songs, give me peaches and mandy moore". you have about - lemme look on mine - about 110 playlists, most are beyond a CDs length. that's currently 6.8 days of continuous music on my 15GB; everything from björk to yeah yeah yeahs. i rate my songs as anything 4 or 5 star songs goes on the pod. anything 3 stars is considered and will be included in context of being a good song, but not the best from that artist and/or in the context of a great album, will be carried by it's brethren.

on the PC, i create a master playlist for the artist, i then create best of mixes for that artist, or general mixes. those mixes are what find their way onto the iPod.
i "buy" a new album, it goes on the pod. i rate it, match the rating to my PC files and then delete the appropriate 3 stars and under songs.

philosophy benefit: if i lose the iPod/exgirl friend doesn't return it/it's damaged coming out of my ass/it generates a bad firewire input port and will cost $150 to fix(that's my 10GB problem), i buy another, drag new or same pLists as before and viola! i'm happy again.

5am....

to summarize: women do smell down ther....i mean, if you like to house 60GB and justify $600 for something as big as a deck of cards that you will drop, put in you pocket that gets wet at a psychedelic furs concert because you forgot the water bottle was open, scratch to all hell and potentially misplace or lose all the accessories at JFK airport while en route to your trip to budapest, then god bless you.

i'd buy color screen, 4x current storage and photo optional only if it was cheaper and the only gadget i really "needed"(really wanted). if i could enable a iPod mini as a hard disk(you cannot) as the white pods can?this allows you to store the human genome, porn and your love letter you're writing to the ex?in addition to housing your music.

always have a back up, regardless of which road you take.
if the iPod interface was more "on the go" organizing-friendly, i may change my tune, but the limited interface doesn't allow me to do what i need to do via the host computer.

with love.
we'll meet the new lady soon.
